What are “Legal Weddings”?
Legal weddings are the ones for anyone who lawfully marry in the State of Hawaii. It requires obtaining marriage license at the Department of Health office prior to the wedding, and a wedding must be performed by a licensed officiant. Your marriage will be recorded officially in the State of Hawaii.
Japanese couples who live in Japan are not required to marry lawfully to have a wedding ceremony in Hawaii. Most of them choose to have a ceremony in a vow’s renewal style. These ceremonies are not official.
However, legal weddings are open for anyone. One of the benefits for Japanese to do so is that the date and the method of your Hawaii wedding will be recorded and mentioned on your Japan family register.
The downside of it is that it takes approximately one month before you receive a marriage certificate even if you expedite the process. During this time you are not able to register your marriage in Japan.
For U.S. residents, international marriage couples(especially ones with U.S. citizens), and anyone who will need a proof of marriage in the United States for immigration purposes, it is highly recommended to have a legal wedding.
Legal Weddings Procedures
1.For Japan residents, check with your local government office to make sure they can record and mention a lawful marriage in the United States on a family register. We will translate the marriage certificate into Japanese.
2. After arrival in Hawaii, no later than the day before the wedding, both of a bride and groom need to appear at the State of Hawaii Department of Health office to obtain marriage license. The Department of Health is open Mon thru Fri except for federal/state holidays. Valid I.D. (passport for Japanese, driver’s license for U.S.citizens) will be required as a proof of the date of birth. We will have an application form ready for you.
3. Bring the marriage license to the wedding. After the minister officiates the wedding, he will report it to the Department of Health.
4. 60~120 days later, you will receive the marriage certificate by mail. In order for you to receive it sooner, the Bliss Bridal staff will go to the Department of Health office after the wedding to apply for the additional copies of marriage certificates. This is the only way to expedite the process. We will attach the translation and mail them approximately 4 weeks after the wedding.
5. Bring the marriage certificate and the translation to your local government office to register your marriage. For U.S. residents, this can be done at Japan Embassy or Consulate General in the U.S. *St. Andrew’s Cathedral is not available for legal weddings. Please inquire if you have catholic faith. *Legal weddings at Calvary By The Sea Lutheran Church are subject to additional charge. *Depending the ceremony location or your faith, we will try to accommodate differently case by case.
